Alexi Grewal: Olympic Athlete; Father; Businessman; and Workingman….
Jasjit and Martha Grewal immigrated to the United States from India and settled initially in Fresno, California. Alexi was born in 1960, in Denver Colorado. At that time Alexi’s father Jasjit, had moved to Colorado to attend the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, Colorado, graduating later with two degrees: Petroleum Engineering and Mining. As the Grewal family grew to a total of 5 children, Alexi’s family relocated to Gunnison, Colorado where his father worked for the US Forest Service. The Grewal’s would later moved to Cody, Wyoming where Alexis father, continued to design bridges and other capital improvements for the US Forest Service.
In 1971, the Grewal’s relocated to Aspen, Colorado to help Alexi’s Aunt with her small fashion boutique . At the suggestion on a friend, Alexi’s father added a few 10 speed road bikes to the store’s inventory…..and after a quick complete sell out of the bikes…..his father converted the fashion business to a Cycling Shop….and Alexi’s future destiny as an Olympic and professional cyclist was launched. The Grewal family continued living in Aspen until 1990, but by then the Grewal family had made its mark on the sport of competitive cycling, in the United States. They include: 10 State titles: 1 National Title: 1 World Title ( Rishi, Alexi’s brother) and one Olympic Gold Medal in 1984, at the Los Angles Games. After his Olympic win in 1984, Alexi rode for 9 years as a professional racer including riding on the first US team to compete in the Tour de France. He competed with some of cycling elite riders including: Lance Armstrong, Greg Lemond, Bernard HInault and Miguel Indurain.
After touring in Europe throughout the 1980′s, in 1992, Alexi married and started a family. Now a single father Alexi has two children: Elijah and Jordyn. Alexi began his transition from professional cyclist and sports figure to everyday working man. A road, like many of his Tour courses, would hold many uphill climbs and downhill high speed runs. In 2001, he began training as an apprentice timber framer with Loveland based: Trail Ridge Timber Frames. As he gained knowledge and experience in timber framing construction and design he began working with his long time friend and cyclist, Mark Miller Now a master level timber frame designer and builder, Alexi ‘s Timber and Truss LLC, is currently located on West 1st Street, in Loveland , CO.
Along with beginning a new career, Alexi , always an activist, began assisting a local Loveland church during a particularly rugged Colorado winter, when they began opening their doors as a homeless night shelter. One of the many homeless men he happened to serve was a local man named Edwin Walker, dying of terminal throat cancer. Because of Mr Walkers influence and encouragement during his finalsix months of life, Alexi began his commitment to public and community service and aiding the less fortunate, in our Community. Since those early 2002 days, Alexi has spent many afternoons at his favorite local charity…The Loveland Community Kitchen were volunteers provide hot meals to the homeless . The Kitchen is also the home of “Meals on Wheels” which daily serve hot meals to many Of Loveland’s elderly and shut in residents.
Father, Olympic Gold Medalist, businessman, and community activist, Alexi Grewal is continuing to serve his community by making his second attempt to be elected Mayor of Loveland, in 2013.
